More than 250 killed and 100,000 homeless! This could have been the headline from the Great Chicago Fire in 1871. The fire started on October 8 but did most of its damage on October 9. As a result, since 1922, we have been having Fire Prevention Week for the Sunday through Saturday timeframe where October 9 falls each year.
