Early Childhood - Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (EC-PBIS)

Early Childhood (EC) Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) Preschool 2023 series teaches participants how to apply the Pyramid Model model to classroom-based settings for ages 3-5. The Pyramid Model is a framework of evidence-based practices that reduces challenging behavior and supports the development of children’s social and emotional skills.

EC-PBIS Preschool Series: (9x2) M1-M3

 Module 1-3

The Early Childhood-Positive Behavior Interventions & Supports (EC-PBIS) Preschool series teaches participants how to apply the Pyramid Model model to classroom-based settings for ages 3-5. The Pyramid Model is a framework of evidence-based practices that reduces challenging behavior and supports the development of children’s social and emotional skills. Content in Modules 1-3 cover Nurturing & Responsive Relationships, High-Quality Supportive Environments and Teaching Social-Emotional Skills.

EC-PBIS Preschool Series (9x2) M1: Nurturing and Responsive Relationships

  • Participants will:
    • reflect on how a caring classroom community supports social-emotional development and will identify classroom structures that promote a caring community.
    • explore strategies to build a positive relationship with each and every child and understand how relationships promote resilience for children impacted by trauma.
    • consider how to structure activities and routines to promote relationships between children.
    • reflect on how family engagement is important to children’s social-emotional development and identify ways to increase connections and communication with families while affirming family culture and identity.
    • identify ways to build relationships with team members and recognize the importance of collaborative planning for enhancing team communication.
    • reflect on how relationship-building helps prevent challenging behavior.

EC-PBIS Preschool Series 2023 (9x2) M2: High-Quality, Supportive Environments

  • Participants will:
    • describe how creating high-quality environments will positively impact behavior.
    • identify the practices they currently use to promote high-quality supportive environments.
    • identify practices related to positive classroom environments and understand how to improve current practices.
    • identify ways of partnering with families to increase their use of practices at home.

EC-PBIS Preschool Series (9x2) M3: Teaching Social-Emotional Skills

  • Participants will:
    • describe how creating high-quality environments will positively impact behavior.

Content in Modules 4-6 cover Individualized Teaching of Social-Emotional Skills, Addressing Challenging Behavior and an Overview of Prevent-Teach Reinforce for Young Children.

 Module 4-6

EC-PBIS Preschool Series (4x2) M4: Individualized Teaching of Social-Emotional Skills

  • Participants will:
    • learn how to identify skills to systematically teach young children who need targeted supports.
    • learn the levels of assistance that can be used to teach new skills and encourage success.
    • receive information on how to use peer mediated intervention to enhance peer interactions and social engagement.
    • practice identifying a skill to teach a child and how to embed learning opportunities across the day during a case study activity.
    • receive a data collection tool to document progress and monitor level of assistance used to support the child in learning a skill or new behavior.

EC-PBIS Preschool Series (4x2) M5: Addressing Challenging Behavior

  • Participants will:
    • identify function-based intervention practices they are doing well in their classroom and those they want to strengthen.
    • identify the antecedent, behavior, and consequence when provided with a scenario of a challenging behavior.
    • identify when a teacher responds by using the 3 essential practices when reviewing a scenario.
    • reframe statements from deficit thinking to a strength-based approach.
    • develop their own neutralizing routine
    • identify a possible function of a challenging behavior after completing an ABC observation.
    • review a completed functional assessment interview.
    • brainstorm possible prevention strategies, replacement skills, and responses for a behavior support plan.
    • identify the family’s role in the individualized intervention process.

EC-PBIS Preschool Series (4x2) M6: Overview of Prevent-Teach-Reinforce for Young Children

  • Participants will:
    • identify PTR-YC as a manualized process for conducting a functional behavioral assessment and developing a behavior support plan.
    • identify the major steps in the PTR-YC process and understand the role of team members in each step.
