Iowa ranks first in the nation with the number of children under age 6 that have all available parents in the workforce. Many of these parents have a tough time paying for child care. In Iowa, child care can cost more than college. Last year, tuition at Iowa colleges averaged a little over $5,000 a year. The average cost of full time child care in a registered home was over $6,000. The average was over $7,000 for care in licensed centers.
